Join me in a weekly examination of the Book of Matthew! (Every Monday)! This week I take a look at Chapter 1 (the Genealogy of Jesus) – and then dig deeper into Joseph and Mary and their reaction to finding out about being pregnant. If you were Joseph or Mary; how do you think you would respond with finding out you were pregnant with the Child of God?
Mary pledged to wed Joseph, she found out she was pregnant – and Joseph doesn’t make a huge deal out of it but decided a divorce is in order. An Angel came to Joseph – they were to remain married, and call the boy Jesus who will be known as Immanuel and everyone will live happily ever after.
Wait, wait, wait! How would you feel if your perspective wife came to you and said,’ I’m pregnant, but I’m a virgin’? I think I would probably throw a fit! I’m putting myself in Josephs shoes, I mean, I know that it was the Holy Spirt but I’m talking a time 7 B.C. and someone is saying I’m pregnant but I promise I’m a virgin. Quite frankly, I would be more satisfied if she said she wasn’t a virgin. Ok, but that isn’t the story. The next part is an Angel came to Joseph
“…“Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[f] because he will save his people from their sins.”
Matthew 1: 20-21
If I’m Joseph, and not a believer, I am now. Plus, I am saying WOW… my life just got turned upside down. I wasn’t really planning on having children right away, but yeah, God, I mean if this is what you want, then, ummm sure. I guess. I mean, there is no arguement, you are talking to an angel.
So just as Isaiah 7:14 states it, the virgin gave birth to a son and called him Immanuel.
To me, this whole passage seems very toned down. I think there would have been more action and more drama involved if I had been Joseph.
