The congregation met in worship this morning considering the theme “Open Our Minds to the Scriptures.”

“Open Our Minds to the Scriptures.”
By: Michael “Mike” Weathers, Indiana, USA

Mike Weathers brought a message of challenge as he shared his own journey of seeking and learning to find guidance in the scriptures. He reminded us that God gives us many gifts and blessings, chief among them is the gift of the scriptures and the Holy Spirit.

Luke 24:44-53

New International Version (NIV)
44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”
45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
The Ascension of Jesus

50 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. 52 Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.

As we study the scriptures, even when we’ve read them many times, we can find new meaning and instruction for our lives. We are to “get up” and “go” after receiving truth from scripture.

Creator God – As we read through happenings in our midst, blessings that have been received and our friends and loved-ones in need, we take time to say “thank you” for this community of believers. We gather together each week in person and/or in spirit and we are grateful for the shared commitment to You that brings us together. We are grateful for the blessing found in community, the blessing that comes from cheering for one another and for supporting each other. As we express our shared love for You, we are drawn together by the Holy Spirit moving in and through us. May that Holy Spirit find open hearts and minds willing to step out in courage to risk sharing that love with people we don’t yet know. May we be willing to take time to hear the story of a stranger, who might just become a friend. May we be willing to share our own story and to share what Your love has done for us. This is our prayer, in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
