Gathering in Silence

Call to Prayer

Lighting of Candle

In the name of Jesus Christ, welcome to this sacred space which “stand(s) as a towering symbol of a people who knew injustice and strife on the frontier and who now seek the peace of Jesus Christ throughout the world.”     —Doctrine and Covenants 161:2b

Today in our prayers we remember the people of Iraq located in Western Asia, and bordered by Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Syria. Two major rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, run south through Iraq. The region between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, historically known as Mesopotamia, is often referred to as the cradle of civilization. It was here that mankind first began to read, write, create laws, and live in cities under an organized government.

Scripture Reading — 2 Corinthians 13:11

Finally, brothers and sisters, farewell. Put things in order, listen to my appeal, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.

Prayer for Peace

Betty Gurney

Great Creator, when we view the grandeur of this world that you have created, we wonder with at our arrogance and we pray that we will humble ourselves and rejoice in your power.

This day, Lord, our praises rise like eagles and beyond our normal mortal realm.  The beauty, the bounty, the immensity of this world fills us with awe.  We pray that we will be fully aware of our stewardship over all that has been created.  We ask, Oh God, that with our abundance we will be aware of all those who live in poverty in this land and all other lands.  Move us to share in whatever way we can.  Help those of us who have much, keep our wants under control so that we might be generous in our giving.

Our thanks seem inadequate for so great a gift but we pray that our love for you will overflow into action, action that will spread like fire, action that will bring the hope of peace to many.

We pray, too, that your Holy Spirit will be recognized by those in places of power, that they will be guided to work for peace in whatever land they dwell.  The people of the world need peace, they need rest, they need comfort, they need their homes to be safe.

May the purpose to which this Temple was dedicated be enhanced by the workings of your spirit, the devotion of those who work from here, and the combined prayers and efforts of the people of the world.  Our needs are great Lord, but our trust is in your Word.  Help the people of your world achieve Peace. Amen.

You are invited to share in the hymn for today, #168 in Community of Christ Sings, “I Will Talk to My Heart” by singing or silently reflecting on the meaning of the text as it is played.  Hymn #168.

Prayers of the People

As we enter into a time of guided prayer, meditation, and musical reflection, you are invited to offer silent prayers or meditate during the moments of quiet.  The Prayers of the People begin with individuals and groups, then move out from this Temple of Peace to include the human family and the planet.

Allow yourself to come reverently into the presence of the Divine and please join with me in prayer. Transformative encounters await you here with the Eternal Creator and Reconciler.

Creator God, cleanse our hearts. Accept the confession of our flaws and failures, and make us whole. Transform us, O God, into the persons of peace and grace you created us to be.

Redeeming God, bring to our awareness those persons and relationships that are broken, and make us conscious of the need for reconciliation and forgiveness. Transform us for relationships of wholeness once again.

Saving God, allow us to feel your love and concern for your children in communities around the world, both far and near including Iraq, the country for which we pray this day.  May we weep with your tears and act with compassion to heal your people from needless suffering.

God of all creation, stir within us a deep connection with everything you have created; make us aware of the sacred nature of all that surrounds us and lead us into deep reverence that cultivates nurturing actions.

May these prayers of concern, compassion, and transformation for ourselves, others, all people, and the earth lead us into a world shaped by your unconditional love, O God, Amen.
