Deep Listening in a Divided World

Deep Listening in a Divided World By Katie Harmon-McLaughlin, Spiritual Formation Ministries When I am attentive, I notice my reaction to conversation with others, especially those with whom I disagree. It is physical as much as emotional. My heart rate increases, there’s a tightening urgency in my chest, and my deepest convictions flare up—all demanding to be voiced. Perhaps the greatest—and most challenging— wisdom I ever have been given is that these difficult encounters can serve as paths to spiritual growth if I can muster the humility to let them. The problem I experience with many of these difficult conversations is that I find myself in a defensive posture rather… Read More

Lollipop Ministry

Lollipop Ministry By Vera Entwistle, World Service Corps My husband and I are volunteers with the World Service Corps in Taipei, Taiwan. We don’t speak Chinese, but many residents understand some English. However, we have become very good at gestures, and the people are very patient. A 7-Eleven convenience store sits two doors from our church entrance. Every Sunday we stop to pick up milk for the coffee we serve in Bible class. One morning in the store, I noticed a young mother struggling with three small, disruptive children. The frustrated mother was trying, unsuccessfully, to calm the children. As I stood at the counter, I spotted a jar of… Read More

Luke 19:1-10 New International Version (NIV) Zacchaeus the Tax Collector 19 Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd.4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. 5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked… Read More

Inviting the Unchurched

Inviting the Unchurched By John C. Hamer, Toronto, Ontario, Canada The 21st century often is dubbed the “Age of the Nones.” The Pew Research Center’s 2015 survey of religion noted that among faith traditions in the USA, the fastest-growing group is the unaffiliated. When asked, “What is your religious affiliation?” 22.8 percent of residents answered “none”—up from 16.1 percent in 2007. The change is even more remarkable because the unaffiliated are concentrated in the youngest generation. Just over a third of Millennials say they are unconnected with organized religion. While important, this data does not surprise Community of Christ members in the USA and Canada. For decades, our congregations have… Read More
