Come, Lord Jesus; Hope

Hope…  Where do you see Jesus amid the chaos and turmoil in our world? What does a posture of hope look like to you? The congregation was asked to consider these questions. Aaron B. shared his reflections on the questions with the congregation. He observed that chaos and turmoil are often rooted in loss, which caused him to think of the 23rd Psalm.  We aren’t promised that Jesus will lift us up out of the valley, but that he will accompany us through it.  We can see Christ in other people as they walk with us through difficult times, times of loss and times of despair. For the second question,… Read More

“Who is this Jesus?”

The congregation explored the theme by watching a video entitled “Who is Jesus to Me?” from World Church.  You can watch it by going to the following web address: After watching the video, we spent some time exploring how we would answer the question: •  What about you? • Who is Jesus to You? (If you’d like, please feel free to leave your reflections in the comments, on Facebook or twitter!) Isn’t it wonderful that his life and example has different meanings to each of us and perhaps even different meanings to us at different times in our lives?   From the Daily Bread Blog for Saturday, November 25th: Up… Read More

“Receive and Be Trustworthy”

“Receive and Be Trustworthy” The congregation explored today’s theme and The Message version of the scripture using a Dwelling in the Word and considering these questions: Matthew 25:14-30 The Message (MSG) The Story About Investment 14-18 “It’s also like a man going off on an extended trip. He called his servants together and delegated responsibilities. To one he gave five thousand dollars, to another two thousand, to a third one thousand, depending on their abilities. Then he left. Right off, the first servant went to work and doubled his master’s investment. The second did the same. But the man with the single thousand dug a hole and carefully buried his master’s money. 19-21 “After… Read More

“Be Wise”

Kevin Blanchard brought the message today focusing on the theme “Be Wise”, which is based upon Matthew 25:1-13.  Kevin interpreted the scripture to point out that the bridegroom is Jesus, the church is the bridesmaids and the oil is our faith.  Our oil (faith) can be increased through prayer, study and acts of service, among other things.  When something is important to us, we plan for it.  We prepare for it. What are we doing in our own faith journeys to prepare ourselves and to be ready? Are we planting seeds and sharing our faith with others? Are we making wise decisions?   Prayer of Intercession – Loving and Wise… Read More

“Humble Yourselves”

Bob Brennan brought the message today giving current application to the suggested scripture.  First, Bob pointed out that Jesus didn’t condemn the pharisees or scribes, but  used them as an example of how NOT to behave.  Are we guilty of condemning people and/or judging them?  Second, he suggested that just as the pharisees and scribes did, we sometimes put heavy burdens on others by placing all kinds of rules on them. Do our rules get in the way of being welcoming and accepting people? Are we doing things that exclude people from relationships with God? Lastly, the pharisees were focused on impressing others.  We are to demonstrate our beliefs through our… Read More

Baby Pandas Grow Up Fast

We were at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis (website) a few weeks back visiting “China” – one of the many exhibits there designed for hand’s on learning.  This particular exhibit is about wildlife (panda) conservation and it educates about the growth cycle of pandas.  As I sat there to taking a photo of my three-year old, Adelyn, the sign above her caught my eye “Baby Pandas Grow Up Fast.”  I thought, “yes they do…” My little panda has grown too fast! It’s in moments like this that I find myself in awe of how quickly little ones grow up.  It’s in moments like this that I find myself concerned for the… Read More

“The Banquet Is Ready”

“The table has been set. The banquet is ready! God prepared a feast for us, a feast of abundant love. Our cups overflow with bountiful grace. This celebration with God will restore our souls and comfort us. Today, let us feast upon the words of Christ; for they will guide and direct our way.” —Psalm 23, 2 Nephi 14:4, adapted Today’s Message: Jami Smith Jami Smith shared a beautiful message today by drawing us into the parable of the wedding banquet found in Matthew 22:1-14.  She reflected on the perspective of each character in the parable, asking the congregation which one/s they related to. She reminded us that we have all been… Read More

“Be Receptive to God’s Will”

Val Brennan brought the morning message focusing on the theme “Be Receptive to God’s Will”.  Val broke down the theme into two parts – “be receptive” and “to God’s will”.  Val shared concepts from President Veazey’s message “Ways of Discovering God’s Will” from January 2011. These concepts included using six different lenses to discern God’s will.  The lenses include scripture, continuing revelation, tradition, knowledge and reason, personal and community experience, and common consent.  Val walked the congregation through the first three and challenged the congregation to watch President Veazey’s message for details on the remaining lenses. Val shared how “spiritual attention” and “spiritual disciples” can open us to God’s will. … Read More
