On the morning of 7.15 we had the privilege of participating in the sacrament of Confirmation of another member to our congregation! Retha Duckett was confirmed by Val Brennan and Jami Smith. “In the sacrament of confirmation, elders place their hands on the head of the new disciple, and one elder offers a special prayer. The prayer of confirmation seeks God’s blessing to help new members grow in their covenant and generously share their giftedness in support of the church’s mission. The commitment made through baptism and confirmation is active “discipleship expressed through covenant with God and others in sacred community” (Doctrine and Covenants 164:2d). Confirmation helps weave people into… Read More

Aaron Black [7.15.2018] – ‘Choose the Right’ He did a wonderful job of bringing to life Mark 6:14-29 and I Nephi 1:59-127. The former tells the story of the beheading of John the Baptist and In the beheading of John, Herod’s actions were legal, but not morally right. Conversely, Nephi’s actions were not legal, but had been directed by God and we can interpret as in line with God’s wishes. Mark 6:14-29 (Mark 6:14-29 New International Version) John the Baptist Beheaded 14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying,[a] “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous… Read More

As part of our worship this morning, we spent time responding to questions posed about Mark 4:26-34, which contains two of Jesus’ parables. In the NRSV, we find: “He also said, “The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come.” “He also said, “With what can we compare… Read More

Val Brennan led us in a spiritual practice called “Dwelling in the Word” using John 3:1-8 (NIV) Jesus Teaches Nicodemus 3 Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signsyou are doing if God were not with him.” 3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” 4 “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s… Read More

Bob Rugg brought the message for Pentecost Sunday. Snippets from his talk include: “In the Bible we hear “the spirit of the Lord is upon you.” The power of the Holy Spirit was given to the descendants of Abraham and then passed to ALL people.” “Pentecost – you have been called. Called to help when and where you can, called to be a messenger, and called to become aware of the impact you’re having on your surroundings.” “The Jewish tradition of the Feast of Weeks is a reminder that God is with us every day of the year.We all have the power of the Holy Spirit within us and can… Read More

Luke is the longest of the four gospels and contains over 60% unique material not found in the others. The author is unknown, but is thought to be Luke, who traveled with Paul. It is based upon eye-witness accounts thoroughly researched by the author. Our theme today was “Listen to the Good Shepherd”, based upon John 10:11-14. John 10:11-14 New International Version (NIV) 11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.12 The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— Mike Daugherty brought the message and shared from his recent experiences… Read More

Our focus moment this morning, Jami Smith used the imagery of wheat to explain how something that is lifeless, in the right conditions, can bring forth new life. During Lent, we are reminded that, like wheat, our lives will be fruitless unless we symbolically die to our self-interests, our needs, and our desires. By putting aside these things, God can use us as we grow in faith through Jesus Christ. Kevin Blanchard continued along that theme in his message. He shared John 12:20-33 with the congregation and noted how Jesus used the example of the wheat to explain how we can die to our own desires and suffer for others… Read More

Amy Sobiski from the Brownsburg congregation shared the message “Create Sacred Space.” She reflected on John 2:13-22 (from The Voice), which is the scripture where Jesus threw the money-changers out of the temple. John 2:13-22 The Voice (VOICE) 13 The time was near to celebrate the Passover, the festival commemorating when God rescued His children from slavery in Egypt, so Jesus went to Jerusalem for the celebration. 14 Upon arriving, He entered the temple to worship. But the porches and colonnades were filled with merchants selling sacrificial animals (such as doves, oxen, and sheep) and exchanging money. 15 Jesus fashioned a whip of cords and used it with skill driving out animals; He scattered… Read More
